How to Unwarp a Cutting Board

Wooden cutting boards require more care than the other types --- such as those made of plastic and stone --- because they are porous and prone to warping. In fact, washing wooden boards or exposing them to high-moisture foods can cause them to warp. Don't despair if you discover your wooden cutting board is no longer flat. You can fix the defect with some common household items.

Things You'll Need

  • Washcloth
  • Steam iron
  • Lay the cutting board on a flat, sturdy surface with the raised side of the warp facing upward.

  • Hold a washcloth under a faucet and soak it with warm water. Turn off the faucet, and wring out the washcloth to squeeze out most of the water.

  • Open the washcloth up and lay it flat on top of the cutting board so that it covers the entire warped area.

  • Plug in a steam iron and turn the temperature to high. Allow the iron to heat up for two to three minutes.

  • Place the iron on top of the wet cloth, leaving it in place for five to 10 seconds, and then slide it to a new area. Continue heating up the board in this manner until you have covered the entire warped area.

  • Set the iron aside and remove the washcloth. Examine the cutting board to see if the warp is gone. If not, repeat the process until the board is flat again. Once the warp is gone, set the board on its side and allow it to dry until all of the moisture is gone.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the surface of your cutting board feels slick to the touch, it probably has a polyurethane coating on it. Sand the surface of the board with a fine-grit sandpaper to remove the coating before repairing the warp.
