How to Finish the Edges of Material Using a Sewing Machine

How to Finish the Edges of Material Using a Sewing Machine thumbnail
Raw edges of fabric often need to be finished.

Finishing, in sewing terms, means to complete the raw edges of a sewing project so the fabric does not ravel or fray. This includes the raw edges of seams, as well as the edges of items, such as the bottom of a curtain or the lower edge of a skirt. The type and weight of fabric and how prone it is to ravel affect the type of finishing treatment that is applied. The desired appearance of the finished item is also a consideration.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Press the edge of the fabric under one-quarter inch for a standard hem on light to medium weight woven fabric. This treatment works well with cotton or cotton blend fabrics. Turn the fabric under again, measuring as you work to ensure the desired depth of the hem. Press and pin in place. Sew along the edge through the first one-quarter inch turn. Overlap the stitching at the end to secure it.

    • 2

Set your machine for zig-zag stitch and stitch along the raw edge of the fabric. Do not turn it under. This is appropriate for the edges of seam allowances.

    • 3

Measure a length of double fold seam binding to match the length of your raw fabric edge. Fold the seam binding over the edge of the fabric and pin in place. Do not fold the edge of the fabric. The narrower edge of the seam binding should go on the wrong side of the fabric.

    • 4

Stitch through the fabric and the seam binding from the back close to the outer edge of the narrow side of the seam binding. Use this finish for aprons or home decor items such as place mats.

Tips & Warnings

  • Another option is to use an overlapping attachment on your machine, or a serger or overlock sewing machine. The stitches created by these attachments and machines create a tighter, more professional look for your raw edges.
