Homemade Shelf Liners

A wide variety of materials may be used to make your own shelf liners. Requirements include being firm enough to prevent wrinkling, easy to clean and non-absorbent. Recycled vinyl shower curtains and plastic-coated table cloths work well. Once the shelf surface is measured, the liner is cut to fit edge-to-edge. Double-stick tape is used to hold the liner in place. Making your own shelf liner is a simple job that takes only minutes to complete.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • T-square
  • Paper or fabric liner
  • Scissors
  • Yardstick
  • Marker
  • Double-stick tape
  • Measure and note the length and width of the shelf. Lay your liner material out on a flat, smooth surface. Using a yardstick and marker, mark cutting lines on the liner in a rectangle, the same size as the shelf. Use a T-square so the corners will be 90 degrees. Cut the liner with scissors on the inside of the cutting lines so the liner will be slightly smaller than the shelf.

  • Test-fit the liner on the shelf and trim if necessary.Once you are satisfied with the fit, remove the liner. Apply double-stick tape to the bottom side of the liner, just inside and along the entire perimeter.

  • Replace the liner on the shelf. Smooth out any wrinkles. Rub your fingers over the edges of the liner to adhere the double-stick tape to the shelf.
