How to Make Smurf Costumes

Since 1958, the Smurfs have been popular cartoon characters. For decades, they have entertained people of all ages in comic strips, cartoons and movies. With all different Smurf characters--Brainy Smurf, Baker Smurf, Lazy Smurf--people often relate to one favorite character. Identifying with and the nostalgia of the characters makes the Smurfs popular choices for Halloween costumes. Making a Smurf costume is not difficult and can be a fun way to reminisce over some childhood memories.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on your outfit of choice. If you choose to be a regular Smurf, your outfit consists of white pants, a blue shirt and white shoes. For a Smurfette costume, wear a white dress with blue nylons. And for Papa Smurf, wear red pants with your blue shirt.

    • 2

Cover your face and neck with blue body paint. You can buy body paint on-line or at a Halloween or crafts store. Wait for the paint to dry; drying time varies based on the product you choose, but usually takes 20-30 minutes. Do not to get any of the paint on your clothing.

    • 3

When making a hat out of paper or felt, outline the shape of the hat on two sheets, cut it and glue the parts together. To make your hat puff out, fill it with tissue paper. Put your hat on when the body paint is dry.

    • 4

Roll up blue socks to make your smurf tail. Attach your tail to your pants with a safety pin.

    • 5

Put blue gloves on. Your Smurf costume is now complete, unless you need to add any final touches to personalize your character, like glasses for Brainy Smurf, a white beard for Papa Smurf or a blond wig for Smurfette.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you prefer to paint more of your body and forgo the T-shirt idea, or are going as Smurfette, buy blue liquid latex body paint. It is non-toxic, won't clog your pores, and is easy to remove. You can purchase latex body paint on-line.
