How to Replace Stove Top Ceramic Glass

Ceramic stove tops are used for many modern cooking ranges. They are flat and don't have any protruding burners, making them easy to clean. However, they are fragile and can break with improper use such as slamming pots and pans on the surface or putting them under the weight of a heavy object. Using a cracked or otherwise broken ceramic stove top is dangerous and you should replace it as soon as possible.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Level
  • Unplug the stove top's power cord to cut the power, located on the wall behind the cabinet below the stove top.

  • Turn the screws counterclockwise to remove them on the underside of the stove top, using a screwdriver. These screws are located within the cabinet under the stove top.

  • Pull the fasteners upward with your hands, also known as retainers, from the stove top to remove them. They are located on the top sides of the stove top.

  • Remove the old stove top. Use one hand to lift the stove top from the underside within the cabinet. Use your other hand to hold the stove top up once it is above the surface of the counter top. Bring both hands carefully to the sides of the stove top. Lift it up and out from the counter top. Place it out of the way to the side.

  • Install the new stove top. Lift the stove top with one hand on each side of the piece. Place it in the counter top space from which you just removed the old stove top. Lower it to the surface of the counter top. Assure that it is centered and level. Use a level tool to ensure that it sits properly in the counter top.

  • Insert the retainers along the sides of the stove top to install them. Slide them downward and into place with your hands.

  • Insert and tighten the supplied screws in the holes on the bottom of the stove top within the cabinet.

  • Insert the power cord of the stove top into the electrical outlet.
