A book cover is essentially a large rectangle, making it an ideal beginner's sewing project. Instead of using brown paper bags or gift wrap, make a book cover that will last for years when you sew one out of fabric. Stabilize it with some interfacing to give it strength, and customize your book cover by matching the fabrics you choose with your school supplies. Sew up a few as gifts and include a gift card to a book store for a do-it-yourself project that keeps on giving.
Things You'll Need
- Measuring tape
- Cotton fabric
- Scissors or rotary cutting tool
- Fusible interfacing
- Ironing board
- Sewing machine
Measure the height of your book, add one inch and call this measurement A. Measure the distance from the front outside edge of your book around the binding to the back outside edge, add 5 inches and call this measurement B. Cut two pieces of fabric that measure A by B inches, then cut one piece of lightweight fusible interfacing that also matches these measurements.
Iron the fusible interfacing to the wrong side of one piece of your fabric. Pin the two pieces of fabric together with the right sides facing one another and, using a sewing machine, sew a straight seam across the top and bottom edges, 1/4 inch in from the edge. Turn the fabric right side out and iron to flatten the seams.
Fold the unsewn edges in toward the center by 1/2 inch, then again by two inches. Pin them in place.
Sew a straight seam across the top and bottom edges of the book cover, making sure to sew the folded fabric portions in place. Make your seam 1/4 inch in from the edge.
Slide the front edge of your book's cover into one folded-over pocket, wrap the cover around your book and tuck the back edge of the book into the sewn cover. Close the book cover and admire your handiwork.
Tips & Warnings
- Sew a button to the front of the cover and an elastic loop to the back if you want it to have a full closure option.
