How to Get the Dingy Look Out of Your Carpet

Most people do not like to do household chores. However, cleaning your home is necessary to keep each room sanitary, neat and looking its best. One area of your home that can be particularly bothersome to clean is your carpet. Some homes have a lot of carpet. You might even have carpeting in every room, making this particular chore dreadful, especially if you have dingy carpet. However, with the right attitude and a few helpful strategies, your dingy carpets will be clean in no time.

Things You'll Need

  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Bucket
  • Hot water
  • Detergent
  • White cloths
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Towels
  • Wet/dry shop vac
  • Vacuum your carpet to remove any surface debris. You should not get the carpet wet until it's been thoroughly vacuumed.

  • Get out a bucket and fill it up with hot water.

  • Squeeze several drops of mild detergent into the hot water. Mix the detergent around until you see suds in the water.

  • Throw a white cloth into the detergent solution. Take it out and wring out about half the liquid.

  • Sponge the dingy areas of your carpeting with the cloth and detergent solution. When you look at the cloth, you will see that the dingy color has come off your carpet and been transferred to the cloth.

  • Continue to sponge the floor with white cloths, changing cloths and adding more detergent as necessary. Stop when a cloth no longer turns a dingy color when sponging the carpet.

  • Place several large towels out over your carpeting. Walk on them. This will remove a lot of the liquid on the carpeting.

  • Look things over. If you still see some dingy areas, add a small amount of hydrogen peroxide to them, and then sponge dry immediately with a clean cloth. This method can remove really tough stains from your carpeting.

  • Allow your carpeting to dry overnight or use a wet/dry shop vac to extract all of the liquid, along with any more dirt that's making the carpet look dingy.
