Wood furniture is made with dry wood. It is essential that the wood is dried prior to using it to build furniture because dried wood shrinks considerably. Shrinkage results in a contortion of the wood shape. Not only is the wood easy to use to cut and build furniture, but it also is much lighter to carry. If you were to attempt to build with wood that wasn't dry, it may vastly affect the shape and stability of the furniture when it does eventually dry.
Things You'll Need
- Draw knife
Apply wax on the ends of the cut wood to seal it. Stack the wood logs outdoors. Leave the bark on and allow the trees at least a year to completely dry. The bark and sealed ends will result in a slow-down of the drying process, but it also allows it to release more moisture. One to two years will ensure that the wood logs are completely dried and ready to be used as furniture materials.
Strip the bark from the logs with a U-bent draw knife. Strip the bark away in long, uniform strokes until the bark is removed from all the logs.
Stack the logs upright until you are ready to use them to build the furniture.
