Dark and dated kitchen cabinets can get a new lease on life with a few coats of paint. Refinishing cabinets with paint is much faster than refinishing cabinets with wood stain and polyurethane. Preparation for painting cabinets is key for a good paint job. Learn how to paint the cabinets before getting started.
Things You'll Need
- Drop cloths
- Rosin paper
- Abrasive sponge
- Household cleaner
- Dry clean cloth
- Wood putty
- Putty knife
- Sandpaper (#120 or #100 grit)
- Tack cloth
- Paint sprayer
- High gloss latex paint
Prepare the room by laying drop cloths on the floor below the cabinets. Tape rosin paper on the countertops to protect them from paint splatter.
Clean the cabinets with an abrasive sponge and an appropriate cleaner. Most types of cleaners that remove grease will work. Dry the cabinets with a dry clean cloth.
Unscrew the doors from the cabinets and remove the hardware. Place the hardware in a specific place so it can be reinstalled later.
Fill dents and cracks in the surface of the cabinets and cabinet doors with wood putty. Spread the putty over each damaged area with a putty knife. Wait for the putty to dry before sanding.
Sand the cabinets with #100 or #120 grit sandpaper. You do not need to sand the finish from the cabinets, but the finish should be dulled so it is no longer glossy.
Clean the dust from the cabinets with a vacuum. Wipe the remaining dust away with a tack cloth.
Use a paint sprayer to apply painting primer to the doors. The paint sprayer will apply the primer without brush strokes. Let the primer dry completely.
Paint the cabinets with a foam paint roller and high gloss latex paint. Apply once coat of the paint with the foam roller, and then use a paintbrush to reach the corners of the cabinets. Once the first coat of paint has dried, apply a second coat. Let the paint dry for 3-4 days before re-attaching the cabinet doors and hardware.
