How to Remove a Bumper From a Nova

If your Chevy Nova's bumper chrome has begun to come off, you can remove it to repair it. If you plan to paint the car, removing the bumper will allow you to fix any dents or rust behind the bumper before you paint it. A body shop might be able to pull the dents out of a bent bumper, but it is made of heavy steel and may not ever look perfect. If so, you can simply replace it.

Things You'll Need

  • Set of wrenches
  • WD-40 or Twister
  • Helper or floor jack

Instructions

    • 1

Reach behind the bumper and spray the bolts with penetrating lubricant. You'll find the nuts on the backside of the smooth lag bolts you can see on the front of the bumper. Allow the penetrant to soak into the nuts---especially if they have developed rust.

    • 2

Loosen the nuts using the appropriate wrench. Have a helper hold the bumper, or balance one end on the floor jack. Remove the nut from the lag bolt, and balance the bumper on the jack or the helper's hands.

    • 3

Remove the rest of the nuts (depending on the year of your Nova, the bumper may be held on by two or three bolts). Remove the bumper.
