Holding the crochet hook properly helps you work quickly and efficiently while keeping your stitches even. Which hand you hold the hook in depends, of course, on whether you are right- or left-handed.

I have always found holding it like a pencil much more natural since we all have used pencils and pens all our lives anyway. I have been doing this for 40 yrs now and I can crochet fast. I think we all have to do what works best for each of us.

on 7/2/2008 I am right handed and I use the knife hold. Pencil hold does not feel "right" to me...and FYI, I crochet and knit pretty darn fast!!
