How to Clean Silver With Alka Seltzer

Clean silver jewelry and decorative items with Alka-Seltzer.

Over time silver jewelry will begin to oxidize. This will create a layer of dark gray or black tarnish that obscures the natural beauty of the polished silver. You can remove the tarnish and restore this polish by using a common household product. Alka-Seltzer tablets will gently remove the layer of tarnish to restore the shine. Do not use flavored Alka-Seltzer as this could leave a residue on the jewelry. Do not use this process to clean silver jewelry with inset pearls or opals.

Things You'll Need

• Glass
• Water
• Alka Seltzer tablets
• Paper towels

Instructions

1. Fill a glass with clear water. Use anywhere from 6 to 8 oz. of water.

2. Drop two Alka-Seltzer tablets in the water.

3. Immediately place the silver into the water.

4. Let the silver sit for 5 to 10 minutes after the tablets have stopped fizzing.

5. Remove the silver and pat it dry with paper towels.
