How to Hem Curtains

Curtains are a great way to add style and warmth to any room in your house. They provide privacy, block out light and cold drafts, and can even contribute to lower utility bills. However, custom curtains are extremely expensive. A cheaper alternative to custom curtains is to hem curtains you already own or to hem ready-made curtains available at any department store. Even if you have very little experience with sewing, hemming curtains is quick and easy.

Things You'll Need

  • Curtains
  • Seam ripper
  • Needle and thread
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Straight pins
  • Sewing machine
  • Fabric pen

  • Lay out the curtains on a large flat work surface. Use the seam ripper to remove the stitching along the bottom hem.

  • Measure the length the curtains will be hemmed to and mark with a fabric pen. Fold the bottom of the curtain over to create a fold along this mark. Use the straight pins to hold the fold in place.

  • Trim the excess fabric from the folded portion of the curtain, but leave at least 4 inches for the new hem.

  • Remove the straight pins, and fold the raw edge of the fabric under twice. Use the straight pins to hold the fold in place.

  • Use the sewing machine or needle and thread to sew along the double-folded edge of the curtain to create the finished hem. Use a steam iron to press out any wrinkles and to flatten the bottom hem.
