Instructions for Making Hooded Towels for Babies thumbnail
Create your own hooded towel for the special baby in your life.

Make a hooded towel for your own baby or for a personalized shower gift. These towels are large enough to be useful for several years and are thicker and more absorbent than store-bought baby hooded towels. In addition, hooded towels don't take long to make.

Things You'll Need

  • Bath towel
  • Hand Towel
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Pins
  • Ric rac, ribbon or other decorations

    • 1

Lay the hand towel on a table so that the long side is horizontal. Cut the hand towel in half. You will only use one half, so put the other away.

    • 2

Fold the finished end of the hand towel piece over about 2 inches until the length of the towel piece measures roughly 10 1/2 inches from left to right.

    • 3

      Sew the edge down.

    • 4

Now turn the hand towel piece so that the cut edge is at the bottom and fold the hand towel in half with the right sides together.

    • 5

Place a pin halfway across the bottom (cut) edge of the hand towel.

    • 6

From the left, push the fold of the towel in to the pin, creating a pleat. To the left of the pin, you'll have two folds of towel, creating four layers in all.

    • 7

Sew across the bottom, catching all the layers in the pleat. Zigzag stitch the seam and cut edge so that they don't unravel.

    • 8

Fold the bath towel in half, matching the two finished ends. Your towel should look more like a square than a rectangle.

    • 9

Measure roughly four inches from the fold on one side and place a pin. Measure four inches down from the pin and place another pin.

    • 10

Sew between the pins, four inches down in a straight line.

    • 11

Open and flatten the bath towel, including the tuck you just made.

    • 12

Lay the hand towel hood on the bath towel, matching the seam on the hood with the tuck of the bath towel. Make sure the right sides of the towels are together.

    • 13

Pin the towels together and sew across the hood and towel. If you like, you can sew it twice to reinforce the seam.

    • 14

Trim the seams to cut down on bulk if you wish.

    • 15

Add any ric rac, ribbon trim or applique you wish to the hood or towel.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use two different but coordinating towels to create a colorful hooded towel.

  • Save the second half of the hand towel to create another hooded towel later on.

  • Applique the baby's initials or name to the back of the hood or towel to further personalize it.
