How to Polish Ceramic Floor Tile

Ceramic tile is one of the most common, popular and versatile flooring materials on the market. It is durable, easy to install and maintain and relatively inexpensive. When it comes to maintenance, ceramic tiles require only occasional cleaning. Though they can’t be polished in the traditional sense of the word because their surface is usually glazed, they can be buffed and cleaned. To keep your ceramic floor in mint condition, learn how to properly polish its surface.

Things You'll Need

  • Broom or broom brush
  • Window cleaner
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Mop and bucket
  • Brush
  • Ceramic cleaner
  • Sponge
  • Towel or cloth
  • Prepare your ceramic floor for polishing by sweeping up all loose dirt and dust from its surface using a stiff broom or a broom brush. Be thorough and make sure to remove all loose particles from the floor.

  • Make a cleaning mixture by combining 1 cup of apple cider vinegar, 1/2 cup of window cleaner and 1 gallon of water in a large plastic bucket. Stir the mixture and dip a mop inside to soak.

  • Clean the whole surface of your ceramic floor with the cleaning mixture and the damp mop. If you prefer not to use a mop, you can use a stiff broom brush or a brush for this part of the task. Allow the floor to dry thoroughly for an hour or two.

  • Dissolve 1 cup of a ceramic cleaning solution in a bucket of hot water. Make sure to choose a cleaner that has a pleasant smell.

  • Clean the whole surface of your ceramic floor once again, using a sponge to apply the ceramic cleaner and then a dry towel to dry the surface. Allow the floor to dry completely.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use lemon juice or rubbing alcohol instead of apple cider vinegar.
  • Wear disposable latex gloves when cleaning and polishing your ceramic floor to avoid skin irritation.
  • Avoid using an abrasive sponge or a scrub pad, which can scratch ceramic tiles.
