How to Decorate a Blank Wall in a Bedroom

If simplicity is your thing, a simple modern, two-toned piece on a blank wall will do the trick.

Decorating reflects the personality and taste of the individual who lives in that space. The bedroom should be your sanctuary, the one room in your home that is your haven and your area of rest and tranquility. What you decide to put on that last blank wall should reflect what helps you reach your mindset of harmony and relaxation. Begin by deciding on what colors or items trigger your relaxation button.

Instructions

Lighting with Sconces

1. 

   Try various sconce styles, depending upon your decorating motif.

   Use a measuring tape and a pencil to measure where you want the first sconce to go, about 6 feet from the floor. Mark the spot with the pencil. Hammer in a nail in that area. Measure from that spot, level across the wall, to the area where you want the second sconce. Use a hammer and nail, and place a nail in that area. Hang the sconces on the nails.

2. Hang a picture between the sconces, or one picture above each sconce, using a hammer and nails. Light candles that are made for those sconces, then place them in the sconces.

3. Place a comfy reading chair beneath the sconces and picture if the blank wall has no furniture on it. Add a fern or a plant beside the chair to create a softened effect in the bedroom.

Mirrors

1. 

   Full-length mirrors add movement and depth to a room.

   Hang a large mirror with a large enough nail or a series of nails to hold the weight.

2. Hang odd numbers of small mirrors, in groups of three, five or seven. Hang them either by nails or by ribbons to match the corresponding decorating theme.

3. Light candles on the opposite side of the room, or in areas where the mirror will reflect the candlelight at night, to help create an atmosphere of relaxation and romance.

Family Photos

1. 

   A frame with different family photos will hold a collage of various sizes.

   Frame a series of family photos in matching frames.

2. Hang the photos in groups of black-and-white prints. If using all black and white prints, keep the prints in uniform black or white frames and hang them in balanced groupings. Use a hammer and small nails to hang the small photos, and larger nails for larger photos.

3. Hang a mixture of color and black-and-white family photos. When using a mixture of color and black-and-white photos, find something in common in the photos when hanging them. For example, group them by size or by family group or holiday. Balance is the key. Hang them with a hammer and a nail. Having family photos in a bedroom creates a family-oriented atmosphere.

Murals

1. 

   Wallpaper murals are popular for decorating entire walls.

   Paint a realistic mural on your blank wall. Murals can add a realistic touch to an entire room and can make you think you are in an entire other city or country, on a beach or on another planet, if you want.

2. Purchase a wallpaper mural. These murals stick on like wallpaper. Follow the manufacturer's directions on the package label.

3. Create your own mural and order one online for the measurements needed for your specific wall. You can send in original art to use with the mural you want to purchase. If you have a favorite photo you took of a beach on vacation, for example, that can be your mural. Follow the manufacturer's directions to apply the mural to the wall.

Create a Faux Window

1. 

   Placing flowers in the curtain ties adds an unexpected flair to the room.

   Measure the back of one square mirror to see where the nail needs to be hung on the back of the mirror. Find the place on your wall where you want the first nail to go, for the first mirror, the top left mirror.

2. Measure across to the right, and hammer the second nail. Place the top two mirrors in place. They should fit together side-by-side.

3. Measure downward from the top left mirror, and mark the place for the left bottom nail and hammer it in. Then do the same for the bottom right nail and set the bottom mirrors in place. They should fit together, side-by-side.

4. Hang a curtain rod above the mirrors by using a hammer and nail. You should place the curtain rod about an inch or two above the mirrors, depending upon the curtains you use.

5. Slide your curtains onto the curtain rod over the faux window. Tie the curtains back with the curtain ties or let them hang slightly open, for a realistic effect.

Tips & Warnings

• Some sconces are electric and some are lit by candlelight. These are great light sources and create a romantic, relaxing ambiance. Mirrors will help to make the room look larger and will reflect light. Space-themed murals can be glow-in-the dark starfields and comets.
