Wilted spinach is an easy and delicious side dish. All it requires is a bunch of fresh spinach, some garlic, butter and a saute pan. This recipe serves 4.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a dash of table salt
  • 4 oz. butter
  • 1/2 tsp. cracked black pepper
  • 3 whole garlic cloves
  • 2 bunches fresh spinach
  • Groceries
  • Paring Knives
  • Salad Spinners
  • Tongs Or Spatula
  • sauté pans
  1. Step 1

Trim the spinach leaves from the stems and discard the stems.

  2. Step 2

Slice the garlic into slivers as thin as a dime.

  3. Step 3

Heat a large saute pan over medium heat for 30 seconds.

  4. Step 4

Add the butter and, when half of it has melted, add the garlic.

  5. Step 5

Cook, stirring constantly, for about 45 seconds or until the garlic is tender and fragrant.

  6. Step 6

Add the spinach leaves, and season with salt and pepper.

  7. Step 7

Use tongs or a spatula to stir the spinach so it cooks evenly.

  8. Step 8

Remove from heat when all spinach leaves have wilted.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wash the spinach in several changes of very cold water. Keep washing until all traces of sand and dirt are gone.
  • Turn the spinach over as it cooks so cooked leaves closest to the pan are replaced with raw leaves.
  • Be ready for the spinach to lose a great deal of volume as it cooks.
  • Keep heat on medium so you don't brown the garlic.

on 11/25/2008 We have a five year old grand daughter who is always wanting to help in the kitchen. I have her wacsh her hands well first. If you have a salad spinner, this would be a good way for a five year old to help...by spinning the leaves to wash. Even pre-washed salad will leave dirty water in a spinner. I allow her to unwrap the butter also. She is very interested in watching things cook, so I allow her to sit on a barstool at a safe distance from the stove top. She loves to be able to say that she helped!
