Mahogany is a term used to describe a variety of different dark-colored woods. It is reddish brown, has a straight grain, no grooves or pockets and it is durable. These traits make it a popular choice for flooring. When cared for properly, mahogany floors can last a long time. Proper care of mahogany floors is fairly straightforward; they need to be cleaned and polished regularly with a gentle cleanser. The ingredients you need to clean mahogany floors can usually be found in your cupboards.
Things You'll Need
- Vacuum (optional)
- Dust mop
- 1 qt. vinegar
- Soft cloths
- Olive oil
- Lint-free cloth
Remove all dirt, dust and debris from your mahogany floor. Sweep thoroughly before wet cleaning. If necessary use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment to remove dirt, dust and debris from beneath furniture and other hard-to-reach places. Use a dust mop daily to remove fine particles and prevent them from dulling the finish on your floor.
Mix 1 qt. of warm water and 1 qt. of undiluted vinegar in a mop bucket. Submerge your mop in the solution and swish it around to mix the two ingredients. Wring your mop out, so it is moist but not saturated.
Mop your mahogany wood floor in small sections. Submerge and wring out your mop as needed. Wipe excess moisture from each section with a soft cloth.
Moisten a soft cloth with olive oil. Polish your mahogany floor in a circular motion with the cloth. Allow the olive oil to set for about 30 minutes, then wipe up the excess olive oil and dry the floor to a shine with a dry, lint-free cloth.
