How to Make a Baby Quilt from Pre-Quilted Fabric

Make a quick baby quilt with pre-quilted fabric.

Fabric manufacturers have taken the long work out of making a quilt as a gift by creating pre-quilted fabric. These time-saving fabrics consist of two layers of cotton quilt fabric layered with quilt batting inside, usually quilted in a grid or diamond pattern. They come in dozens of different print designs, including holiday and juvenile patterns. Use pre-quilted fabric for your next baby quilt project and you'll have a handmade gift in a fraction of the time that an entirely handmade quilt would take.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 1/2 yard pre-quilted fabric
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Cotton double-fold bias tape
  • Measuring tape
  • Sewing machine
  • Needle
  • Thread

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of all four sides of the quilt combined. Add 2 inches. This will be the length of bias tape that you will need. If one skein of bias tape is not long enough, stitch together two or more skeins until you have enough in one continuous piece.

    • 2

When the bias tape is folded in half the two sides are not equal. The larger side goes on the back of the quilt and the smaller side goes on the front.

    • 3

Open the tape up and start pinning the bias tape to the front of the quilt. Begin in the middle of the top quilt edge. Lay the bias tape with the right side down and touching the top of the quilt. Match up the raw edge of the bias tape with the edge of the quilt. Pin the bias tape along the edge of the quilt until you reach the corner.

    • 4

Pin the bias tape to the top quilt edge until you reach the upper right corner. The bias tape will be running from left to right on the quilt edge. Fold the bias tape up so that it lines up with the right edge of the quilt in a straight line, going up and down. Place a pin in the exact corner of the quilt to hold this folded bias in place. Fold the bias tape back down along the right-hand edge of the quilt, covering the fold that you just pinned. This has created a mitered corner fold in the bias tape.

    • 5

Pin the bias tape down the entire right hand side of the quilt until you hit the corner, then make another mitered corner. Continue in this fashion until you have finished all four corners.

    • 6

Continue pinning the bias tape until you reach the spot where you began. Fold the end of the bias tape strip toward the backside, making a 1/4 inch fold. This will prevent a raw edge from showing on top. Unpin the very first pin that you placed in the bias strip to loosen the beginning of the strip from the quilt. Place the end of the bias on the quilt, then lay the beginning of the bias over it. This will overlap the folded end of the bias strip over the raw edge of the beginning of the bias. Pin all layers of bias strip in place to complete the circuit around the quilt edge.

    • 7

Stitch the bias tape down on the quilt using a sewing machine. There are three folds in a double fold bias tape. Sew directly along the nearest fold line, close to the raw edge of the quilt. Do not stitch farther away than the fold line or your quilt edge will not be even.

    • 8

Fold all of the bias tape edging over to the back side of the quilt. The center fold of the bias tape will line up with the very top of the quilt edge. Pin the third folded edge down to the back of the quilt. Make sure that the center fold of the bias tape hits exactly at the quilt edge. Do not pull it farther or your quilt edge will be bunchy.

    • 9

Thread a needle with sewing thread that matches the bias tape. Take small stitches all along the pinned folded edge to sew the back of the bias tape to the back of the quilt.
