How to Sew a Magnetic Clasp

Making handmade purses and bags often necessitates the use of magnetic clasps to close the handbags securely. To properly install a magnetic clasp, you must insert it into the handbag before you finish sewing the bag or you will not be able to access the fabric adequately for sewing. Sew a magnetic clasp in between the layers of your bag and then finish the construction of the bag. When you finish, your handbag will have a smart and attractive clasp to keep it closed securely.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the components of the magnetic clasp before you begin the installation process to ensure you understand how they work. You should have four pieces to work with, including the male side of the clasp, the female side and two washers. The washers install on the wrong side of the fabric.

    • 2

Determine the placement of the magnetic clasp on the wrong side of the fabric on both sides of the handbag. Cut two 3-inch squares of interfacing and iron these squares onto the wrong sides of the fabric over the general area where you will be installing the magnetic clasps.

    • 3

Position each washer at these locations over the interfacing squares and make marks with the fabric pen through the center hole in the washers and the two lines on either side of the center hole to enable you to prepare the fabric.

    • 4

Sew small buttonholes around the two lines above and below the center hole marks with the sewing machine. You will be sewing four buttonholes altogether, two for each washer. The buttonholes will keep the fabric from fraying after you cut the lines out.

    • 5

Cut through the fabric inside of the buttonholes with the seam ripper.

    • 6

Position the washers over the wrong side of the prepared fabric (on the interfacing squares), lining up the center dots and the slits on the washers over the buttonholes on the fabric.

    • 7

Place the male side of the magnetic clasp on the right side of the fabric on one side of the handbag, inserting the prongs through the buttonholes to the backside of the fabric and through the holes in the washer. Bend the two extending prongs toward the center over the washer to finish installing this half of the magnetic clasp.

    • 8

Place the female side of the magnetic clasp on the right side of the fabric (opposite side of the handbag), again inserting the prongs through the buttonholes and through the washer and then bending them toward the center over the washer.

    • 9

      Finish constructing the handbag.
