How to Knit a Stocking Hat

You don't have to be Santa Claus, a Smurf or on a cereal box to wear a stocking hat. They are fun to wear, and when you get cold, you can just wrap the long end around your neck. They are fairly easy to knit.

Things You'll Need

  • 8 oz. worsted weight yarn
  • 16-inch circular needle, U.S. size 7
  • Double-pointed needles, U.S. size 7
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Cast on 72 stitches onto the circular needle. Put a safety pin on the right needle to mark the beginning of the round. Join the stitches together.

  • Knit two and purl two every round for about 2 inches.

  • Knit in stockinette stitch, knitting every stitch, until the hat measures about 4-1/2 inches from the cast-on round.

  • Knit 10 stitches. Knit two stitches together and put a ring marker on the right needle. Repeat this pattern five times. Knit to two stitches before the safety pin, and knit two stitches together. You have decreased six stitches.

  • Knit even, with no decreases, for three rounds.

  • Knit to two stitches before the ring marker and knit two stitches together. Repeat five times. Knit to two stitches before the safety pin, and knit two stitches together. This is a decrease round.

  • Knit three rounds even.

  • Repeat the last two steps until you have only two stitches between the markers. Change to the double-pointed needles when the stitches no longer fit comfortably around the circular needle.

  • Knit two stitches together and remove the marker. Repeat five times. Knit two stitches together before the safety pin. You have six stitches left.

  • Knit two stitches together for the round. You have three stitches left.

  • Cut the yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail. Thread the yarn through the tapestry needle and then through the last three stitches. Draw the stitches together snugly. Thread the tail inside the hat and weave in the end.

Tips & Warnings

  • Stitch gauge for this hat is four stitches per inch.
  • The hat circumference is about 18 inches, and the finished hat will be about 27 inches long.
