How to Write a 1st Birthday Greeting Message

Writing a birthday greeting for a 1-year-old might seem difficult or unnecessary at first since the child probably won't pay much attention to the message at this time in her life. Yet, you probably want to convey the love, feelings and emotions you feel for the child as your birthday message can become a keepsake she'll read when she's older. Even if she never really "gets" your birthday message, writing it out will help you express your feelings for her.

  • Address the birthday greeting to the baby. For example, start with "Happy Birthday Bobbie" or "Dearest Bobbie." If the baby is yours, make it more personal so he can feel your emotions when he reads the card years later. "My sweetest Bobbie" or a similar sentiment would be fitting.

  • Insert a poem written specifically for a baby's first birthday. The poem can be cute, funny or sappy. Borrow a poem from a book or website if you aren't much of a poet.

  • Write a personal message to the baby or her parents. Include details about how you feel about her, how happy you are to share this milestone, any way that she has changed your life or how excited you are for her parents. For example, "You have made each day brighter for me, and I am so glad you came into my life 12 short months ago. I've loved watching you learn to crawl, walk and talk and I can't wait to teach you even more."

  • Write "Happy 1st Birthday" or another appropriate closing---for example, "With all of my love" or "I love you, sweet baby."

Tips & Warnings

  • It's OK to write a message to the parents, as they are the ones who will be able to read and appreciate your greetings right now. As long as it's personal and sincere, it's appropriate. For example, "Thank you so much for letting share in your special day. It's been a pleasure to watch your baby girl's first year of life!"
  • Avoid just signing a pre-printed birthday card. The card should include "1st birthday" and some sort of personalized message, even if you add it onto a pre-printed card.
