Replace the insoles on your sneakers if they begin to smell.

It is not uncommon for sneakers to smell. Sneaker odor is the result of bacteria growing inside of the shoes. This bacteria thrives in warm, moist places, making the inside of shoes an ideal breeding ground. Sneakers and sweaty feet combine to produce a foul odor. Fortunately, you can freshen up sneakers and leave them smelling clean with common household products. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 16 oz. box of baking soda
  • 2 socks
  • String
  • Plastic wrap
  • Clove oil
  • 4 cotton balls

Instructions

    • 1

      Pour 1/2 box of baking soda into a sock. Pour the other half into another sock.

      Tie the top of each sock with a piece of string. Put the sock into the toe of each sneaker.

      Let the socks sit in the shoes for at least 24 hours. Remove the socks and discard the baking soda.

      Line the bottom of each sneaker with plastic wrap if the odor persists. Put 2 to 3 drops of clove oil onto four cotton balls.

      Put the cotton balls on top of the plastic wrap inside of each sneaker. Let the cotton balls sit in the shoes for a minimum of two hours, but preferably 24 to 72 hours, before removing them.

Tips & Warnings

  • Dampen the inside of the sneakers with vodka for another way to get rid of the odor. Let the sneakers air-dry in the sun.
