How to Make a Drain Cleaner With Vinegar & Soda

Drain cleaning can often be an unpleasant task, as you typically get stuck paying high prices for a commercial drain cleaner that is either ineffective or causes damage to your plumbing system. When you clean your drains with an effective solution, however, you will find drain cleaning to be a quick, painless task. Using vinegar and baking soda works well in this instance.

Things You'll Need

  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Boiling water
  • Plunger
  • Sprinkle 1/4 cup baking soda into your drain.

  • Pour 1/2 cup vinegar into your drain also, which immediately foams when it reacts with the powdered baking soda.

  • Leave the area and allow the solution to clean your drain for three hours. This will allow enough time for the foaming mixture to work its way through your pipe system, requiring no work on your part during this time.

  • Pour a large pot of boiling water, approximately 1 gallon, down the drain to wash away the remaining foam solution.

Tips & Warnings

  • Plunge the drain, if needed, to loosen large clogs.
