How to Dress Retro in Emo
Emo is a subculture defined by sensitivity and passivity. The term "emo" is short for "emotional" or "emotive." Emo style is often signified by darker colors, band logos and a preference for comfort over trendiness. Emo culture borrows heavily from the previous subcultures of goth, punk and new-wave punk. It follows logically that emo style borrows from the retro look of the 50s, 60s and 70s. Retro emo is an evolving hybrid that attempts to combine the dominating themes from each subculture. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Choose vintage T-shirts that feature popular punk, goth, rock or emo bands. Although you can buy genuine vintage at thrift stores or second-hand stores, many stores now carry vintage reproductions of band shirts. You can also substitute worn or weathered versions of T-shirts of current popular bands for the real thing.
-
2
Layer a tight-fitting flannel button-down over a vintage t-shirt. Accessorize the flannel with safety pins to imitate 1980s punk style.
-
-
3
Wear dark-colored, tight-fitting jeans with tapered legs, reminiscent of jeans of the 1950s. Accessorize jeans with thin leather or studded belts.
-
4
Wear vintage or reproduction sneakers like Converse or Chuck Taylor. Alternatively, purchase used bowling shoes to imitate 1970s punk style.
-
5
Accessorize the outfit with decade-specific articles. Thin neckties are reminiscent of the 1950s, while wallet chains or pins will recall the do-it-yourself style of the punk era.
