Instructions

Chain three and join with a slip stitch to form a circle. Chain one and make six half double crochet stitches in the circle. Join with a slip stitch to close the round.

    • 2

Increase the crown of your hat. To do this, chain one and make two half double crochets in every stitch around, then join with a slip stitch. For round three, chain one and make one half double crochet in the first stitch followed by two in the second; repeat this pattern around and join with a slip stitch. For round three, make one half double crochet in each of the first two stitches followed by two in the third; repeat this pattern around and join with a slip stitch. Continue to increase by adding one more individual half double crochet stitch into your pattern before making two stitches in one. Stop increasing when the circumference of the hat is approximately one to two inches smaller than the circumference of the child's head.

    • 3

Crochet evenly around for the next few rounds. To do this, chain one and make one half double crochet stitch in every stitch around, then join with a slip stitch. Repeat this step for several more rounds until the hat is tall enough to cover the child's ears. Fasten off and weave in your loose ends.

Make a pair of animal ears. For pointed ears, chain six and make a single crochet in the second chain from the hook and each chain across. Chain one and turn, then make one single crochet in every stitch across. Chain one and turn, then work single crochet two together across the first two stitches, single crochet in the third stitch and single crochet two together across the last two stitches. Chain one and turn, then work one single crochet in each stitch across. Chain one and turn, then work single crochet three together across the three remaining stitches. Fasten off and repeat for the second ear.

Sew the ears to the top of the hat using a large eye blunt needle and extra yarn. Use scrap yarn in a different color to embroider animal eyes to the head if you desire, or use buttons for this purpose.

Tips & Warnings

  • For rounded ears instead of pointed ones, crochet a small circle. To do this, follow the pattern for the start of the hat but finish off after the second round. Sew these to the top of the head by flattening the bottom of the circle against the hat first.
