Mold will grow wherever it has food, moisture and humidity. This means you can find mold growth in just about any place if the conditions are right. Mold can grow rapidly on fabric, including clothing as well as bedding and window treatments, such as curtains. If you have come across mold growth or mold stains on curtains, do not disregard the idea of using them. You can remove mold from curtains using household cleaning products.
Things You'll Need
- Protective gloves
- Face mask
- Coarse bristled brush
- Non-chlorine bleach safe for all fabrics
- White vinegar
- Spray bottle
Use a coarse bristled brush and brush the mold off the curtains. It is best to do this outside to avoid contaminating an area of your house with airborne mold spores.
Create a mixture of equal parts water and non-chlorine bleach in an empty, clean spray bottle. If the curtains' care instructions specifically instruct not to use any form of bleach, you can substitute white vinegar instead. Spray the mixture directly on the mold-affected areas, saturating the material. Allow the mixture to set for 30 minutes.
Rinse the curtains thoroughly, and launder as normal. Once the curtains are clean, allow them to air dry. If you notice a mold stain remains, repeat steps 1 and 2.
Tips & Warnings
- If the mold has been on the curtains long enough to cause a permanent stain, dye the curtains a darker color after cleaning to hide the stain.
- Mold can cause health problems, especially if inhaled. Always wear a protective mask and gloves when dealing with mold.
