When sharing a small space like a dorm room or studio apartment roommates find themselves desperate for privacy. Adding any type of permanent dividing structure is impossible in situations like these and undesirable since it would make a cramped space feel even more cramped. What you need is a flexible room divider that can be moved in and out of place as needed. By installing a simple DIY curtain divider you can have your privacy when you want it and still have optimal use of your total space when you need it.
Things You'll Need
Decide where you will want to place the room divider. Measure from wall to wall to determine how long your wire and wide curtain panels need to be. Also measure from the floor to the height that you will hang the divider to determine how long your curtain panels should be.
Purchase heavy duty, self tying steel wire and turn buckles from your local hardware or home improvement store. Make sure you purchase the wire that can safely hold at least 100 pounds. Although your curtains are unlikely to weigh that much, this will ensure that your curtains are hung safely and securely.
Purchase the curtains you will use for the divider, making sure to buy enough panels to cover the width that you determined in step one.
Install your hanging wire according to manufacturer's directions. Generally, this will require you to measure and mark the wall for two holes for the turn buckles. Measure carefully to ensure the holes are level to each another, otherwise your curtain divider will not hang straight. Drill starting holes and then screw in the turn buckle anchors until firmly anchored to the walls. Insert one end of your hanging wire into the turn buckle and then twist to tie off that end. Stretch the wire across to the other turn buckle in the opposite wall, pulling taut. Use the wire cutters to cut off any excess length but do not tie to the remaining turn buckle yet.
Slip your curtains on to the wire and then attach the loose end to the remaining turn buckle. Pull taut and make sure the wire is hanging level before tying it off. Your DIY curtain divider is now finished.
Tips & Warnings
- Choose colorful or patterned curtains to add an extra designer touch to your space. Use semi-sheer curtains to divide the room while adding a touch of romance. If money is a concern, instead of ready-made curtains, you can purchase a length of fabric or even inexpensive flat bed sheets to use. Add a pocket hem to hang the fabric or sheet, or avoid sewing by purchasing clip rings.
