Treadle sewing machines are gaining favor.

Treadle and peddle sewing machines are still in use and are coming back into favor as more and more people choose to sew their own clothing and household items and to save energy. The simple, straightforward operation of a treadle machine makes it easy to learn to use. The threading sequence may look confusing, but it's just a logical downward progression with the thread looping halfway around the tension disc.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a spool of thread on the spool pin with the thread coming off the back of the spool so the spool turns counter clockwise.

    • 2

Pass the thread through the retainer guide at the top of the machine.

    • 3

Pass the thread down and between the discs of the tension guide and back up into the hook of the tension spring.

    • 4

Pass the thread into the eyelet of the take-up lever and down through the next guide on the faceplate of the sewing machine.

    • 5

Pass the thread down through the guide at the top of the needle bar and thread the needle from left to right

Tips & Warnings

  • The first retainer guide may be at the back of the machine or on top depending on the model.

  • Do not pass the thread under the tension spring. The thread should pull the spring up as the take-up lever is raised.
