How to Remove Climatic Stains

Kallie Johnson

Climatic stains are stains that form in fabrics due to the humidity in certain climates. Climatic stains typically occur in white or light colored fabrics and present themselves as yellowish colored stains, which then turn to brown.

Climatic stains can cause white fabrics to turn yellow and then brown.

Depending on how long the stain has been sitting in the fabric and the type of fabric the stain is on, removal can be fairly simple to impossible. To prevent stains from occurring, fabrics that aren't routinely used or worn should be placed in airtight bags or containers.

  1. Pre-soak the fabric. Fill a bucket or sink with water as hot as the fabric can stand. Add a pre-soak or 1 tbsp. laundry detergent per gallon of water. Place the fabric in the water. Allow to soak overnight.

  2. Place the fabric in the washing machine. Select the water temperature and cycle appropriate for the fabric type. Use white vinegar in place of laundry soap. Place a 1/2 cup of bleach in the washing machine for white fabrics that are bleach-safe.

  3. Remove from the washing machine when the cycle is complete. Repeat the steps if the stain is still present. Do not dry fabric if the stain is still present as the heat will further set in the stain.
