Instructions

    • 1

Begin by sanding the wood with 150-grit sandpaper to remove any splinters, flaking paint and sharp corners. This will also help the wood accept the pickling stain better. With a moistened rag, wipe away any sawdust or debris from the wood.

    • 2

Drape a drop cloth over any surfaces that you wish to be protected during the pickling process. Pour the quart of paint into the mixing container. A large empty paint can may also be used. With the paint stick, stir the paint and add the cup of water. Stir until the paint and water are mixed thoroughly; this becomes the pickling stain.

    • 3

Use a paintbrush to smooth a coat of the pickling stain onto a section of the barn wood wall. Allow the stain to soak into the wood for a few minutes and then wipe the excess away with a dry, clean rag until you achieve the look you want. Continue adding stain and wiping until you have covered the entire wall. Several coats may be needed to achieve the coverage that you desire. Allow the stain to dry completely.

    • 4

With a separate paintbrush, smooth a clear sealer over the barn wood wall. This will keep the stain from fading and protect the wood from surface damage. Depending on your preference, glossy or flat sealer may be used. Allow to dry completely.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pastel tints can be added to the pickling stain. These can be found at most specialty paint stores.

  • Always paint in a well-ventilated area.
