How to Clean Velveteen Fabric

Sophie Levant

Velveteen, a velvet-like fabric often made from cotton, lends itself well to use in home decor and clothing. Through proper care and handling, velveteen has the potential to last for a long time. Fortunately, cleaning this fabric is not difficult. While professional dry cleaning is ideal for velveteen, you can wash, dry and iron it safely and effectively at home.

  1. Turn the velveteen inside out if it was made into a garment.

  2. Place the velveteen into your washing machine. Because velveteen attracts lint, do not add any fabrics that shed, like towels.

  3. Pour detergent into the washing machine barrel. Set your washing machine to run on the delicate cycle.

  4. Place your velveteen into the dryer once the wash cycle is complete. Set your dryer to run on the delicate cycle.

  5. Iron the velveteen by placing it face down onto a clean towel. Set your iron to high heat with steam. Press the iron to the back of the fabric.
