Crochet: Instructions for Making a Dog Hat

A hat for a dog can provide warmth, fashion or both.

Crocheted hats provide warmth and fashionable style to anyone who wears them. But you shouldn't limit your crocheted hat-making to the human members of your family; you can use crochet for making a dog hat, too. Make your dog a crocheted hat to keep his head warm during cold-weather walks.

• Crochet hook
• Scissors
• Large eye blunt needle

Instructions

1. Make two chain stitches, then make five single crochet stitches in the second chain from the hook. Join with a slip stitch to form a circle.

2. Chain one and make two single crochet stitches in every stitch around. Join with a slip stitch to form a circle.

3. Chain one and make one single crochet in the first stitch followed by two in the second; repeat this pattern around and then join with a slip stitch. Chain one and make one single crochet in each of the first two stitches followed by two single crochets in the third stitch; repeat this pattern around and join with a silp stitch. Continue to increase in this manner, each time adding one more individual single crochet before the doubled stitch in your pattern. Stop when the hat measures about one inch smaller than the circumference of your dog's head.

4. Crochet evenly in the round until you reach the desired height for the hat. In order to do this, chain one and make one single crochet stitch in every stitch around, then join with a slip stitch to form a circle. Repeat this until the hat is as tall as you need it to be, then fasten off and cut the working yarn, weaving in the loose ends with a large eye blunt needle.

5. Join your yarn to the side of the hat with a slip stitch. Chain 35, then fasten off. Weave in the ends nearest to the hat. Repeat this step on the other side; these will form the ties that will keep the hat on your dog's head.
