How to Use a Sewing Machine Without a Manual
A beginning sewer or sewing hobbyist on a budget may choose to purchase a used sewing machine to get a better machine for a lower price than purchasing new. When buying a used machine, or when pulling out an old one, you may not be able to locate the manual. Even without the manual, the sewing machine can still be useful: Use what you know about the general principles of sewing with a machine and transfer these ideas to the new machine by process of trial and error.

1
Clean and oil the machine before beginning. Use tweezers to pull lint from the bobbin area directly beneath the needle and presser foot area.
-
2
Wind the bobbin. Many machines offer a self-winding bobbin feature, which is normally at the end of the long arm of the machine. If you can't determine how to wind the bobbin without the manual, purchase pre-wound bobbins or a bobbin-winding machine to help.

Insert the bobbin into the bobbin case and attempt to thread the bobbin. In general, the bobbin thread must pass through the machine and come out to the top of the casing where the top thread will interlock it to create a stitch. It may take several tries with both the bobbin thread and the top thread in place before creating a stitch successfully.

4
Thread the top needle. Purchase a new needle applicable to the make and model of the sewing machine. Replace it by loosening the needle assembly with a screw to the right of the needle, removing the old needle, and inserting the new needle. Tighten the assembly. Add the spool of thread to the thread mechanism and run the thread down through the mechanisms to thread the machine.

5
Practice stitching using scrap fabric and attempt another method of threading the bobbin or top needle as needed. If the machine stitches, but the stitches loop or gather too much, adjust the tension. Most machines have a dial to the left of the needle that adjusts the tension.

Tips & Warnings
Be patient when trying to figure out a sewing machine without a manual. If you get frustrated or stuck, try finding a manual online for a similar model or taking it to a fabric store to ask for advice.
Unplug the sewing machine before making adjustments to the threading mechanisms or replacing the needle to reduce your chance of injury.
