How to Cook Chicken Sausage

Thomas Hooke/Demand Media

Chicken sausage is a healthier, leaner alternative to pork sausage. It is lower in both calories and fat and just as delicious by many accounts. You can use it in place of pork for Italian meals, sandwiches and stir-fry mixtures. You only need a few supplies and ingredients to cook chicken sausage and integrate it into your meal.

Boil the chicken sausage on high heat in a medium pot for at least 30 minutes.

Empty the pot of its water and place the chicken sausages aside, away from the heat. Add one teaspoon of olive oil to a non-stick skillet for every two links and use a spatula to distribute it. Place the pan on the stove on medium-high heat and allow it to heat up.

Slice an onion and place it in the pan. Insert the boiled sausage links. Cover the pan and allow it to cook for about five minutes. Allow the onion to cook down and caramelize as the sausage fries.

Fry the chicken sausage until you see a visible black mark on each side. Use a spatula to gently press the sausage down for more thorough cooking, but not for long because you don't want too much of the juice to escape from the sausage.

Serve your sausage. Place the sausage on a toasted hot dog bun and then place the onions on top.

Alternately, you can remove the sausage from the heat and slice it into half-inch pieces if you want to add these pieces to your sauces or stir-fry mixture.

Split the chicken sausage open with a knife and sprinkle mozzarella cheese inside as another option. Place it back in the skillet and cover it to allow the cheese to melt. You can then either eat the link with a knife and fork or place it on a bun.

Things You'll Need:

  • Olive oil
  • Pot for boiling
  • Skillet
  • Shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Knife
  • Spatula

Tip

Ideal condiments for a chicken sausage sandwich include mustard (Dijon and regular), ranch dressing and steak sauce.
