How to Plan a New Year's Eve Mystery Party

Often, by the time New Year's Eve rolls around, the party scene has grown a bit stale. For mystery lovers, nothing can liven things up again like an evening of finding out whodunit.

Difficulty: Moderately challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Costume Jewelry
  • Costume Makeup
  • Costumes
  • Mystery Kits
  • Beer
  • Fruit Juices
  • Gin
  • Mixed Drink Mixers
  • Party Snacks
  • Rum
  • Soft Drinks
  • Tequila
  • Vodka
  • Postage Stamps
  1. Step 1

Visit your favorite toy or game store and choose a mystery kit.

  2. Step 2

Invite as many guests as there are characters in the game.

  3. Step 3

Cast each guest in the role of a particular character and send him or her the appropriate invitation (the invitations included in the kit contain complete profiles of victim, murderer, detectives and witnesses).

  4. Step 4

Instruct each guest to come dressed in character and prepared to act the part.

  5. Step 5

Encourage the characters to get acquainted over cocktails, and then go on to rout out the villain.

  6. Step 6

Pop the champagne corks, and toast the new year and the triumph of good over evil.

Tips & Warnings
  • Fear not that you'll offend your guests' sensibilities: These kits feature intellectual challenges and civilized sleuthing of the Agatha Christie variety, not the horror and mayhem of best-selling thrillers.
  • While the content is mild enough for children, it's likely to be above their heads. Teenagers, on the other hand, usually make enthusiastic - and savvy - players.

on 11/22/2005 Throw a costume party and encourage your guests to come in disguise. At the end of the party, award fun prizes for most scary, sexy, funny, weird, costumes, etc. It was fun and memorable last year, and this year my theme is "Halloween Meets New Year"!
