How to Make Confetti or Almond Favors for an Italian Wedding

Sugared almonds wrapped in colored netting, called confetti, are a popular wedding favor given away at Italian weddings.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Craft Nettings
  • Ribbons
  • Sugared Almonds
  • Scissors
  • Bridal Magazines

Step1
Purchase sugared almonds from a specialty candy shop or gourmet market in your area a few weeks before the wedding. Look in the yellow pages to find out your options. Or, order them online. Do a keyword search on the Internet to find some suppliers.
Step2
Buy enough candy for all your guests. One Italian wedding tradition dictates that 5 almonds be given to each guest to symbolize health, wealth, happiness, fertility and long life.
Step3
Buy netting or mesh (the fabric often used to make bridal veils) in the bridal section of a craft shop or fabric store. You will need enough to cut out a 6- to 8-inch round for each guest.
Step4
Select a color that matches your wedding decorations.
Step5
Purchase spools of very thin ribbon. Allow 12 to 16 inches for each favor.
Step6
Buy extra quantities of all of your supplies just in case you make a mistake or need more than you think.
Step7
Trace the outline of a small plate (6 to 8 inches) onto a piece of cardboard to serve as your pattern or guide. Cut out the circular shape.
Step8
Use the pattern to draw (in pencil) as many circles as you will need on the netting. (If you are making a large quantity, break this up into smaller batches you can do over time or ask bridesmaids to help.)
Step9
Cut out all of the circles and lay them flat.
Step10
Cut the ribbon to the length you want.
Step11
Place the designated number of almonds in the center of each circle.
Step12
Lift up all of the sides of the netting together around the almonds to form a little bag.
Step13
Cinch the bag with a strip of ribbon and tie it with a small, neat bow to finish off the confetti.
Step14
Place a confetti at each guest's plate at the reception so they will have a remembrance to take home.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider ordering special ribbon that is printed with the names of the bride and groom and the wedding date. You can find such personalized items advertised in many popular bridal magazines. You can check with party stores in your area. Or do a search online for vendors.

on 11/22/2005 When I went to Italy for my cousin's wedding, I saw another way to give five almonds. Instead of tulle, they put the five almonds into pockets of a strip of ribbon, pulled the strings on the ends of it and it makes a flower. They put pretty porcelain calla lillies on it. They called it Coccarde.

on 11/22/2005 Why not use tealight candles instead of sugared almonds? Not everyone likes the little sweets but the candles can be used as a decoration in your guest's homes.
