Young girls in centuries past practiced embroidery stitches on samplers, fashioning motifs, alphabets and verses. Today, antique samplers have become treasured artworks. Modern crafters sometimes embroider on old linen to duplicate the old-time look.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Study sampler designs in books, museums and antique stores.

  2. Step 2

    Collect embroidery patterns for motifs, verses or alphabets you hope to include.

  3. Step 3

    Combine elements. Draw a chart of your overall design.

  4. Step 4

    Select fabrics, thread colors and stitches.

  5. Step 5

    Embroider your sampler and include your "signature."
