A kufi is a small, tight-fitting cap that can be worn by people of any age. If you want to crochet a kufi cap, simply choose a yarn and hook to suit your personal taste, and then crochet a beanie with a detailed stitch pattern. Keep it close fitting, and let it stop right about ear level for the proper fit. For this pattern, you will need a basic understanding of crochet stitches and crocheting in the round.

Things You'll Need

  • Worsted weight yarn
  • Size I crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Large-eye blunt needle

Begin with a circle. Make four chain stitches, and then make 11 double crochet stitches in the fourth chain from the hook. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the original chain three; this counts as a double crochet stitch. Your circle now has a total of 12 double crochet stitches.

Increase the size of the circle. For round two, make two double crochet stitches in every stitch around. For round three, make one double crochet in the first stitch followed by two in the second stitch, and repeat this pattern around for a total of 36 double crochet stitches. Continue to increase until your hat is approximately 1 inch smaller than the circumference of the wearer's head.

Work the sides of the hat. Make one double crochet stitch in every stitch around for the next two rounds. Then make a patterned stitch for the following round. For the pattern stitch, chain three (counts as initial double crochet) and skip the next stitch. In the following stitch, work one double crochet, one chain stitch and one double crochet; this is known as a v-stitch. Skip the next stitch, and work a double crochet in the following stitch. Continue this pattern around: skip one, v-stitch, skip one, double crochet. Join with a slip stitch to the start of the round. For the next round, work one double crochet in each regular double crochet from the previous round, and work one v-stitch in the chain one space in the center of each v-stitch from the previous round.

Finish the brim. When the hat reaches the ears, stop with your patterned stitches and make one round of regular single crochet stitches in every stitch around (this means every double crochet and every stitch or stitch space of the v-stitches). Fasten off, cut your working yarn with scissors and weave in your loose yarn ends using a large-eye blunt needle.

Tips & Warnings

  • To make a flat-topped kufi cap, work your first round of even double crochet stitches in the back loops only of the stitches from the previous round. This will give a clear division between the starting circle and the sides of the cap.
