How to Knit a Newsboy Cap

Knit a newsboy cap for anyone in your life, from toddler to adult. A classic newsboy cap includes a firm, stabilized hat brim on a soft, cloth hat. This style lends itself surprisingly well to knitting, particularly if you work in a tight gauge with a firm and sturdy yarn. Classic black or gray is one option, but don't hesitate to experiment with a variety of colors when you knit a newsboy cap.

Instructions

    • 1

Knit a gauge swatch. Choose a yarn and needles that produce a gauge of about three and-a-half stitches per inch.

    • 2

Cast on 80 stitches on a 16-inch circular needle to make the brim for your knit newsboy cap pattern. Knit four inches in stockinette stitch. Knit five stitches and increase one around on the next row for a total of 96 stitches. Continue in stockinette for one and-a-half inches, then bind off rather loosely. Set aside.

    • 3

Use a long tail cast on to cast on 112 stitches to your 16-inch circular needle for the crown of the hat. Work one inch in knit 2, purl 2 ribbing. Work 2-1/2 inches in stockinette stitch. Place a stitch marker every 14th stitch around the round on the next round.

    • 4

Begin decreasing rather rapidly. Knit 12, knit two together to the end of round on the next round. Continue decreasing before each marker every other round until two stitches remain between each marker, for a total of 16 stitches. Switch from a circular needle to double point needles when necessary.

    • 5

Cut the yarn and run it through the live stitches. Pull it taut and weave in the ends.

    • 6

Use the brim template to cut plastic to size. (see Resources). Adjust if necessary to fit your head.

    • 7

Fold the stockinette tube in half and insert the brim plastic into the tube. Sew the folded stockinette brim onto the crown of the hat using the mattress stitch for a neat finish.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use smaller needles and yarn to make a hat for an infant, toddler or child. Size the brim down using a photocopier or your printer to make a smaller template.

  • Add cables or colorwork as desired to the cap.

  • Choose washable yarn to make this cap machine washable; however, shape it and allow it to dry flat to keep the brim in good condition.
