How to Decorate a Kitchen With Almond Appliances

Shannon Morris

Can you design a beautiful kitchen around almond-colored appliances? Yes, if you follow a few simple tips. You may actually consider yourself lucky to have almond appliances, since almond is a true neutral color.

When remodeling on a budget, many home owners choose to work around existing appliances.

It may not be the most fashionable color at the moment, but you have many more options than you would if you were stuck with old appliances in harvest gold or avocado green. The key to success in designing around any existing feature is to make that feature look as if it were selected intentionally.

The first step in any remodeling project is to determine your budget.
  1. Decide how much money you can devote to remodeling your kitchen and prioritize your projects accordingly. If you are on an extremely tight budget, you may have to make do with paint and a few accessories to give your kitchen a fresh new look. If you have more to spend, research the costs of different counter top materials, cabinetry and flooring to determine what options are within your reach. Compare prices at several different stores to make sure you are getting the most for your money. Outline exactly how you plan to allocate each part of your budget, keeping in mind that it is typical for home improvement projects to come in anywhere from 25 to 50 percent higher than expected.

  2. You can use a patterned fabric or wallpaer as color inspiration for your new kitchen.
  3. Choose your design inspiration. Review decorating magazines and clip out any kitchen photos that appeal to you. This works especially well when you can find kitchens with almond appliances, but you will gain valuable insight by collecting a variety of photos. Once you have collected at least a dozen photos, lay them all out on a table top and review them carefully. Chances are, you will begin to recognize certain similarities in the photos such as common color schemes, decorating styles or materials. These are your clues to defining your own unique design taste. Follow these clues to select paint colors, wallpaper, curtain fabrics and other materials for your new kitchen design. Make sure to include almond as one of the colors in your new scheme. If you are not confident in your ability to select appealing color combinations, try to find a fabric or wallpaper pattern that you love. Identify two colors, in addition to almond, that you will pull from this inspiration pattern. This is your new color scheme.

  4. Use colorful kitchen accessories to draw attention away from dated appliances.
  5. Complete the phases of your redecorating project in their proper order. Major installations such as new cabinetry, flooring or countertops should be completed first. Also consider replacing your old kitchen faucet for an instant update. Next you can paint existing cabinets and replace cabinet hardware. If you want your almond appliances to visually disappear, paint your lower cabinets an almond color. Upper cabinets can be painted to match or you may use a contrasting color from your new color scheme. If your almond appliances are in good shape, you may choose to highlight them by painting your lower cabinets in a contrasting color. Freshen your walls with a new coat of paint or wallpaper and hang new curtains. Replace any dated light fixtures with new lighting that fits in with your design style. Select brightly-colored accessories to draw attention away from any dated elements that must remain in the space.
