How to Make Felted Slippers

Felted slippers are the perfect answer to chilly feet. They are warm and cozy, and they're a perfect knitting project for beginners because you can't see the mistakes in the knitting once they're felted. The felting process is fascinating the first time you do it. Felted slippers make wonderful, heartwarming gifts.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 or 2 skeins of worsted 100% wool
  • 16-inch circular knitting needle
  • Tapestry needle
  • Cast on 15 stitches, and knit back and forth until the piece is about 4 to 5 inches longer than the foot. The slipper needs to be this large to compensate for the shrinkage during the felting process.

  • Pick up a stitch for every hole around the foot. Join the ends together for knitting in the round, and knit about 5 inches in the round. Loosely bind off. The slipper will look crazily big, but that's how it should look.

  • In the place you just bound off, pick up a stitch for every hole where the toes will be. Continue to knit back and forth until the toe looks proportional to the rest of the slipper. Loosely bind off.

  • With your tapestry needle, sew the back seam. Make it loose enough that it will be easy to get the slipper on and off the foot once the slipper is felted.

  • Repeat Steps 1 through 4 to make the other slipper.

  • Felt both of the slippers at the same time to make sure they're the same size. Wash the slippers in a washing machine with an agitator. Use hot water, and check the slippers regularly as they wash to check the size. The longer you leave them in the machine, the smaller they will be.

  • Remove the felted slippers from the washing machine and allow them to air dry on a folded dry towel. Slip rolled-up, dry wash cloths into the slippers to give them the shape of a foot as they dry.
