1
Obtain a book of carpet samples. You can find them at carpet stores, home improvement retailers, decorating concerns, and via interior decorators.
-
2
Compare the carpet sample colors to the color on your walls. Hold the carpet samples up to the wall of the room you are carpeting. See for yourself which colors match and which clash. You may find that certain samples fit better with your wall color than others. Matching the wall and floor covering colors should create a sense of harmony.

-
3
Narrow your choices to two or three carpet colors. If others are included in the selection process, get their opinions as well.
-
4
Obtain carpet remnants in your selected shades. Your carpet retailer should be able to sell or give you small pieces of carpet in the colors you have chosen.
-
5
Lay the remnants on the floor next to the wall. Try to imagine how the floor will look covered in each of your selected colors. Will it promote a sense of harmony? Or does the carpet look different when it is actually placed on the floor? If none of your three choices seems to work, you may have to choose another two or three shades. Getting it right is worth the time and effort of returning to the store more than once.
-
6
Make your final selection. Using a process of elimination, choose the carpet color that you feel best matches your wall colors. Be sure you are completely comfortable with your choice before purchasing and installing the carpet.

Tips & Warnings
You will have to live with your choices for a while, typically, so make this process deliberate. If your first two or three color selections do not feel right, don't hesitate to return to the store to find more choices. In a process like this, going with your gut--or instincts--may lead to the best results.
Do not purchase carpet for the entire room until you are sure you can live with it for some time. Carpet that does not match the walls may create a sense of disharmony that can lead you to tend to avoid using the room. Lack of harmony in color choices may also make family and friends uncomfortable, though they may not understand exactly why.
