How to Kill Dust Mites

In all likelihood, your home is host to uninvited guests, dust mites. Dust mites feed on dead skin cells, pet hair, and other fibers that find their way in your carpet, bedding, and drapes. The worst part about dust mites is the waste they leave behind; their feces is one of the most potent allergens and can trigger asthma, as well as irritating nasal passages, eyes, and causing body itch. Here are the steps to take to kill dust mites.

   Use solar power. The sun is a potent weapon in your quest to kill dust mites. Dust mites thrive in the deep pile of carpets and blanket fibers kept your dark bedroom. Simply taking out your bedding, rugs, or drapes into full sun can kill most of the dust mites currently living there.

2. 

   Freeze them out. Another way to kill dust mites is to place your sheets into a waterproof bag and place them in freezing temperatures like those found in your freezer or outside if winter is particularly cold in your area.

3. 

   Wash them out. The most effective way to kill dust mites is to wash your rugs, drapes, or bedding in water that is at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature will kill dust mites and their eggs and should wash the majority of them off of the fibers.
