How to Sew a Trumpet Skirt
Trumpet skirts are the perfect way to add a little femininity to your wardrobe. Tight fitting in the hips and flaring out past the knees, they can make a beautiful silhouette. Because of its intricate shape, a trumpet skirt may seem difficult to make. However, it's a rather simple process as long as you take it one step at a time. With common sewing materials and basic sewing skills, you will be able to make your own inexpensive trumpet skirt that you can personalize as much as you want.

1
Measure the circumference of your hips and add 6 inches. Divide this number by 6. For instance, if your hips are 36 inches, 36+6=42 and 42/6=7.
-
2
Cut out six panels of fabric that are each 1 yard long and as wide as the number of inches you got from step 1.
-
-
3
Sew each of the panels together, one after the other, stopping 12 inches from the bottom of the fabric on each panel.
-
4
Cut out six triangles of fabric that are each 12 inches long on each side. Sew two sides of a triangle into each of the openings you left at the bottom of the fabric panels. You should now have a piece of material that is straight at the top and flares out at the bottom.
-
5
Sew the two sides of the skirt material together to form a sort of tube, with the flare at the bottom. Hem the bottom of the skirt.
-
6
Hem the waist of the skirt, leaving a 1 inch opening. Cut a piece of elastic that is just long enough to fit around your waist.
-
7
Thread the elastic through the waistband, using the 1 inch opening. Gather the fabric as needed. Hand sew the two ends of the elastic together and hand sew the 1 inch opening closed.
