Hang Mirrors. Large framed or panel mirrors make the room look much bigger than it really is. It's amazing to take down the mirror after having it up for awhile and seeing how the room changes and looks smaller. Small decorative mirrors on walls are likewise effective in making the room look bigger. Also add floor mirrors, particularly in corners.

Clear Your Clutter. A lot of clutter in the room makes it look smaller. For example, excessive knick-knacks, kid's toys, boxes, and just plain old junk take up room. Clear out that clutter and watch the room look bigger.

Place Smaller Furniture Around the Room. If you have large chairs, tables, couches, or coffee tables in the room, replace them with smaller versions of the furniture. For example, a large rocking chair in a corner could be replaced with a smaller decorative antique chair. Or, a gigantic couch could be replaced with a loveseat or two.
