How to Secure a Bookcase to a Wall

Bookcases are a great way to store and display your books while adding charm to any room. Bookcases come in a variety of styles, shapes and sizes. While most bookcases are sturdy, some tall bookcases can be unstable and tip over if bumped. In order to prevent your bookcase from falling over, you must secure the bookcase to the wall. Things You'll Need

  • L-brackets or corner brackets
  • Drill
  • Screws
  • Wall anchors
  • Hammer
  • Pencil

      Place the bookcase against the wall where it will be secured. Hold the L-bracket in place and mark the screw hole on the top of the bookcase and on the wall.

      Pull the bookcase away from the wall and lay it on it's back. Using the drill, drill a small starter hole in the mark on the top of the bookcase. Screw the L-bracket into the top of the bookcase.

      Using the drill, drill a hole in the mark on the wall. Gently tap the wall anchor into the hole completely with the hammer.

      Place the bookcase up against the wall and line up the L-bracket with the hole in the wall. Screw the L-bracket into the wall securely.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may need to attach more than one L-bracket to the bookcase if it is particularly oversized.
