How to Remove a Chocolate Stain From a White Comforter

Chocolate leaves behind telltale thick, brown stains on a white comforter.

Delicious chocolate leaves a less than pleasant stain on your bright, white comforter. You must deal with both the brown color and the oils from the chocolate to successfully remove the stain without making it worse. By carefully removing the chocolate substance and attending to the stain with the right cleaning supplies, you can remove the chocolate completely and avoid leaving a telltale brown stain on your white comforter.

Step 1

A spoon removes chocolate substance without ripping your comforter.

Lay the stained portion of the comforter across a flat work surface. Use a spoon to scrape off any chocolate substance to prevent it from spreading further into your white comforter. Wipe the chocolate off on a paper towel and continue until you've removed all the chocolate substance.

Spray the chocolate stain with an aerosol petroleum-based prewash stain remover. The petroleum in the prewash helps break down the greasy portion of the chocolate stain. Leave the prewash on the comforter for three to five minutes.

Step 3

Wash the white comforter with heavy-duty laundry detergent and oxygen bleach to remove the rest of the chocolate stain. Add 1 cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle to remove any remaining grease or smell from the chocolate stain.

Sponges gently lift and clean stains from many surfaces.

Check the comforter before drying. If any chocolate stain remains, sponge the stain with dry cleaning solvent to lift the color transfer. Wash the comforter again and dry it according to the care label directions.

Tip

If the chocolate stain leaves a greasy oil mark, cover it with baking soda or talcum powder for 10 minutes to absorb the grease.

Use a large capacity washer at the laundromat for a particularly large comforter.

Warning

Avoid drying the comforter with any remaining chocolate stain present as the heat from the dryer causes the stain to become permanent.
