Instructions

Familiarize yourself with the color wheel. The wheel is comprised of 12 various colors grouped by hue. The complete family of the primary color blue consists of blue; blue-green; blue-red-violet; violet and blue-violet. Colors that are found directly opposite are complementary, while the shades that are found directly next to a primary color are the most harmonizing. In the case of navy, yellow would be its complement.

Make your choice. In decorating you have an abundance of options for mixing color. In any room you must first determine your goal. Shades and hues of navy will result in a harmonious palette while walls of yellow or red will provide vivid contrast.

Turn the lights on; turn the lights off. Once you have selected a few possible color choices, test them out. Paint a couple of poster-sized wallboards and lean them against a wall. Evaluate your choices over a couple of days. A look at them in the morning, afternoon and evening as well as during bright sunshine-saturated days and gray cloudy days will help you to determine your best fit.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider your accessories: you can always use this area to provide contrast to your navy furniture with yellow or red colored accessories. In this case, opt for a soft non-competing wall color such as warm beige or off-white.
