How to Make Tassels for a Crocheted Scarf

Tassels on a crocheted scarf add the fringe trim to the ends. They can be made with one strand of yarn or multiple strands. The tassels can be attached in different ways. You can use a technique similar to the lark's head knot in macrame with one or more strands, or create a tied tassel that resembles a haystack with multiple folded strands bound together near the top to form a knob above the fringe.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Yarn to match scarf
    • Crochet hook used for scarf
    • Ruler
    • Scissors
    1. Lark's Head Knot Tassel/Fringe

      • 1

Measure a piece of yarn that is twice the length you want your tassel to be. It will be folded in half to create the tassel.

      • 2

Cut one length of yarn for each stitch across the short ends of the scarf. If you want the fringe to be thicker, cut more than one strand per stitch.

      • 3

Fold the length of yarn in half to form a loop. If using multiple strands, hold them together and fold them to form the loop.

      • 4

Hold the loop against the back of the scarf and insert the crochet hook through the front of a stitch on the short end of the scarf. Catch the loop in the hook and pull it through the stitch to the front of the scarf, about half way.

      • 5

Insert the ends of the folded length(s) of yarn through the loop on the other side of the scarf and pull to tighten. This forms a lark's head knot around the bottom row of the scarf.

      • 6

Repeat steps 3 to 5 across both short ends of the scarf to add a tassel to each stitch in the row. Trim the fringe even with the scissors when you are done.

      Tied Tassel

      • 1

Cut five lengths of yarn for each tassel. Because these will be thicker than lark's-knot- style tassels, you may want to add them to every other stitch on the short end of the scarf instead of every stitch on the row.

      • 2

Cut pieces of yarn the same length as the tassels to serve as ties for each tassel.

      • 3

Insert the crochet hook into a stitch on the back of the short edge of the scarf, grab the lengths of yarn and pull them through to the other side, so that one half of the length of each strand for the tassle is on each side of the scarf.

      • 4

Grasp the entire tassel in your hand with the scarf at the top.

      • 5

Use your other hand to wrap the length of yarn for tying around the top of the group of strands, about 3/4 to 1 inch from edge of the scarf. Pull tightly to secure, then knot. This creates the round "knob" at the top of the tassel.

      • 6

Repeat steps 4 to 6 for each tassel you want to add to the scarf. Trim the tassel fringe even when you are done.
